Chest of drawers: how to choose the best one?

Komoda, jak wybrać najlepszą?

Hidden histories

The chest of drawers is a piece of furniture with a soul. It owes this both to its unique history of creation, dating back to the private chambers of the Sun King himself, and to the fact that it often conceals our intimate souvenirs and the memories associated with them.

"Commode" in French means "convenient". And it is! The first commode appeared in the bedroom of Louis XIV, designed by André Charles Boulle in 1690. It was a commode with a marble top, two drawers, and was dripping with gold. It was a small piece of furniture, on high legs, richly decorated with inlays and wrought bronze ornaments. In this way, the commode became synonymous with sophisticated interiors, furnished in an elegant tone, often referring to the Louis style. The history of the commode also includes a Polish accent. In the Kolbuszowa carpentry workshop, a tilting writing desk, known as a secretaire, was designed, thanks to which the commode began to function as a desk.

Today, the commode is a very versatile piece of furniture. Its ubiquitous nature is evidenced by the fact that it can be found in virtually every room. It works well not only in the bedroom, but also in the living room, dining room or hallway. More and more often, this piece of furniture can also be found in bathrooms, where it elevates the status of the space to a living room, while emphasizing the relaxing character of the room. The commode is a piece of furniture with many faces and just as many purposes. Today, we can safely say that it is difficult to imagine a beautifully furnished home without it.

On the market, we can find many models of commodes with designs referring to traditional, richly decorated examples, as well as more modern ones, with a simple, uncomplicated form. However, the most beautiful commodes can be found in the offer of Italian manufactories, where the secrets of the art of furniture making have been passed down from generation to generation. "Made in Italy" commodes are masterpieces in terms of form and materials used. Among them, examples veneered with mahogany or walnut and inlaid with inserts of other types of wood deserve special attention. However, all models are distinguished by durability, combined with elegance. They delight with their simplicity and functionality, hidden under a refined design.

The versatility of this piece of furniture is evidenced by the fact that even in the living room alone, a commode can fulfill several functions. From a TV cabinet, to a handy library, or a place for audio equipment. Inside, it can hide practical shelves or spacious drawers, facilitating tidiness. Its top, in turn, is an ideal place to display paintings, photographs or family souvenirs. But that's not all. Many modern commodes impress with their modern design and interior, which can be lined, for example, with quilted soft leather! LED diodes can also be installed in this furniture to subtly illuminate the interior.
