Dobrodzień, a town of carpenters

Dobrodzień – city of carpenters
Dobrodzień, the city of carpenters, is a town of several thousand inhabitants in the Opolskie Voivodeship. It is an extraordinary place, with a centuries-old history and traditions. In Dobrodzień, furniture traditions are almost 200 years old, and today there are over 100 furniture factories operating here, presenting their products on a total area of 10,000 m2. Dobrodzień furniture making has gained renown not only in Poland, but also worldwide. Local furniture manufacturers have won numerous awards, distinctions and certificates, and their products are known and valued in many parts of the world.
The history of Dobrodzień is extremely interesting. It can be safely said that the unique entrepreneurship of its inhabitants was influenced by the city's location, as well as the coexistence and intermingling of various cultures over the centuries. Tracing the history of this place, we learn that Dobrodzień belonged to Piast Poland, then the Hohenzollerns, Habsburgs, Prussia, was the property of Saxon kings, part of the German state, until finally in 1945 it became part of Poland. This extraordinary history also gives rise to the city's name Guttentag, which surprises many visitors and greets them at the entrance alongside the name Dobrodzień.
Dobrodzień – city of carpenters is the logo of Dobrodzień, which perfectly characterises the city. Craftsmanship developed here for many centuries; the first mentions of guild activity in Dobrodzień date back to 1374. From old documents, we learn that in 1812 there were already 104 workshops of various specialities here. One of the oldest carpentry workshops continuously operating to this day is the one founded in 1893 by Karl Jonczyk. It is now run by the fourth generation of the family, still cultivating the good traditions of the workshop, caring for its development and the high quality of the furniture produced here.
Among the most famous manufacturers from Dobrodzień is the Kler company, founded by Piotr Kler in 1973. Initially, as the founder and master craftsman himself says, the company's capital was the work of its own hands and a head full of ideas. Today, Kler is one of the largest producers of exclusive lounge furniture in Poland, with 34 of its own showrooms in Poland and 200 friendly ones worldwide. In addition to comfortable lounges, the brand also offers comprehensive furnishings for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, as well as wardrobes and office furniture.
Exactly 20 years after Piotr Kler's establishment, in 1993, Janusz Lissy opened the Lissy Production-Trade-Service Company. The company produces, among other things, professional billiard tables on which official tournaments with the participation of the best players are played. A slightly younger company is Meblonowak, founded in 1995 by Jan Nowak, now a furniture manufacturer under the Novelle brand. Halupczok Kuchnie i Wnętrza, founded by Adrian Halupczok, is also among the younger, but dynamically developing companies around Dobrodzień. The company specializes in the production of high-class, modern kitchen furniture. It successfully combines traditional, precise, artisanal techniques with modern materials, designs and technology. These are just a few examples of carpentry workshops that have been operating in Dobrodzień and the surrounding area for many years.
In Dobrodzień, Silesian hospitality is almost proverbial, and the ubiquitous dialect will charm everyone. Attachment to the heritage of ancestors is a special value of the inhabitants of this land, who eagerly cultivate its multiculturalism and tolerance. It is a charming place full of historical monuments, surrounded by forests, silence and fresh air. But Dobrodzień is also a place where manufacturers meet designers – both young, still learning, and those whose names are known throughout Europe. Since 2012, Dobroteka has been a unique "platform" for such meetings. Dobroteka is an undertaking that creates an innovative platform for cooperation between manufacturers, designers, architects, the world of design and science.
