The Material Culture of West African Peoples – a journey through art, tradition, and soul

West Africa – a place where every object tells a story, and every mask conceals the spirits of ancestors. It is a land where folk art not only adorns daily life but also becomes a vehicle for deep traditions and spiritual experiences.

On January 30, 2025, at 12:00 PM

we invite you to the Dobroteka Interior Gallery in Dobrodzień for the opening of a unique exhibition entitled "The Material Culture of West African Peoples".

This unique exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rich artistic traditions of Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ghana. All presented exhibits are the fruit of the labor of local, folk artists – often anonymous, but undoubtedly endowed with extraordinary talent and a sense of form. Their works, creating a bridge between everyday life and the sacred, bear witness to the rich culture and traditions of the peoples of the Black Continent.

The exhibition, which includes both works of art and everyday objects, showcases a diversity of uses and meanings. Particularly noteworthy are the intricate masks and sculptures – masterpieces whose creation requires not only manual skills but also a deep knowledge of local customs and beliefs.

A accompanying photography exhibition offers an additional look at the work of Claretian missionaries in Africa. These images, captured by the lens, show not only the daily life of West African peoples but also the challenges and fruits of evangelistic work. Among the missionaries, Father Roman Woźnica cmf – a Claretian – played a special role, and on this day, he will share his experiences and memories from his missions with us.

May this exhibition be an opportunity for us to reflect on the richness of cultures that often remain in the shadow of global narratives, and at the same time teach us sensitivity to the beauty and spirituality of another human being.

The exhibition will be available at the Art Exhibition Gallery in Dobroteka until April 14, 2025.
